Written by Botho Strauss for Peter Stein in 1983, “Der Park” tells of Oberon and Titania’s coming to Earth, two gods borrowed from Shakespeare’s “A midsummer night’s dream”, in an attempt to restore harmony to human society. But they find themselves, at night, in a park inhabited by a mixed group of young drifters…

Der Park is a tragicomedy that Botho Strauss wrote especially for Peter Stein in 1983, and which was staged by the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, directed by the same Stein in 1984 with Bruno Ganz and Jutta Lampe. The story focuses on Oberon and Titania who, in the hope of leading humanity back to regaining lost harmony, visit a city park at night. A poetic play of metamorphosis where merciless scenes are painted of the society in a park, completely misunderstood by the gods who believe themselves to be in a mythical place, when in reality it is simply extremely humanised nature. As Franco Quadri writes: «An allegory of our times, through the transporting of the Dream to the Berlin Tiergarten or to Central Park in New York, which follows the customary language of Strauss, perhaps with a little more ambition in the classic references».
