Giordano Bruno, a musical opera on a philosopher and revolutionary thinker, a religious man and martyr of the Church, could only exist as a tapestry of profiles and cultures. The libretto is by Stefano Busellato, based on original writings by Giordano Bruno. The music is by Francesco Filidei (pictured), a composer who stands out from the new generation for his style and language and who, this year, was recognised by the Abbiati Award of the Association of Italian Music Critics. «The image of Bruno at the stake, his body touching the burning wood, is at the centre of the opera – explains Filidei – The original idea was to work in an operatic context as for classic repertoire. […] I then imposed a structure of twelve scenes and the contrast between the so-called philosophical scenes, where the various theories of Bruno are presented, and the scenes of his trial, following historical chronology, from his arrest to his torture. […] I imagined them as places in a memory, each associated to an image, a colour. It is not until the eleventh scene, that of the stake, that all of the notes from the previous scenes come together, all of the colours blend, and that which had been constructed is destroyed. In my operas there is always a destructive element. I want to go beyond beauty, to render the matter aggressive, interesting and thought-provoking».
