Posthumously staged in 1937, this is the last ofLuigi Piradello's masterpieces, and it is incomplete. The story is that of a company of actors who reach, during their pilgrimage in an unspecified time and place, suspended between fantasy and reality, a villa named "la Scalogna".
As Roberto Latini explains: "I find it perfect for Pirandello and the twentieth century that the final legacy of this playwright, who had a fundamental role in contemporary theatre, was unfinished. Following the wonderful stagings that great directors and actors of recent and contemporary theatre have already presented us, I feel that it is necessary to give in to other temptations. I want to muster all of the imagination I can to move from the words of Pirandello to an unknown limit. Take them "out of time and space", as indicated in the first stage direction, take them away from the characters and their nuances, from the characters themselves, from the mechanisms of dialogue, hoping that this may lead me to something else, something which I don't know, something else, beyond all that I can dismember. If the limits of my language are the limits of my world, to go beyond, to at least try, well, that's where I have to start".
