Carlo Colla & Figli stages the puppet version of an enjoyable comedy by Molière which pokes fun at human credulity by parodying medical practices of the time. All against a backdrop of the love between two youngsters, contrasted by the greed of a father mean both with money and sentiment, which triumphs in the end through the cunning of Sganarello.

A part of the Carlo Colla & Figli repertoire since the second half of the 19th century in a formula which underlined the characteristics of the Commedia dell’Arte, highlighting the “Italian mask” of the puppetry company, Gerolamo, substituting the original Sganarello, Il medico suo malgrado by Molière now returns to the stage in a new version which fully respects the text by the French playwright both with regards to the characters and the setting.
Martina, the wife of Sganarello (Gerolamo), as revenge for having been beaten, passes him off as a rather bizarre but talented doctor who only carries out his profession if physically forced to... through beatings. Sganarello is therefore “encouraged” to treat Lucinda, the daughter of the wealthy Geronte, who appears to have been struck by sudden muteness. The girl is in reality only trying to save herself from a marriage arranged by her father with which she does not agree, as she is in love with Leandro, an apparently ordinary young man. Having discovered the ruse, Sganarello uses all of his cunning to simulate a successful cure and force the father to accept the love between the two youngsters.
