History provided William Shakespeare’s imagination with a Richard III who is horrible, deformed, monstrous, with a perverse mind and an unbridled ambition.
Thomas Ostermeier, director of the Berlin Schaubühne , presents his interpretation of the character of Richard: violent, animated by an irrepressible anger which he initially directs at the enemies of his brother Edward, king before him, and then - after the death of the latter - against all of those who obstruct his rise to power, Richard is also a splendid seducer and manipulator who uses the traumas and resentments of others with Machiavellian skill in order to make them instruments for his own ascent.
Defined by German critics as “sublime and sensational”, the play is the portrait of a ruling class which is devoured by the thirst for power and destined to be a witness to the triumph of a perverse dictator.
