Created by young actors who are inmates in the Beccaria juvenile prison, together with a number of their peers, and directed by Giuseppe Scutellà, Shakespeare’s Dream becomes an opportunity for its interpreters to discover other worlds and to travel beyond their confinement.

In A midsummer night’s dream , fantasy and reality are interwoven. “It is this capacity to transcend reality which attracted us”, explains the director, Giuseppe Scutellà. Puntozero is an unusual company, three quarters of which is composed of young convicted actors. The rehearsals are held in prison and prison means bars, confined spaces and daily rhythms decided by others. “in this context”, continues Scutellà, “it seemed to us that the Dream could offer a useful exercise of fantasy which allowed the actors to discover new worlds. It is in this recital of new worlds and the creation of new contexts that prison theatre expresses all of its strength; begin with the boards of the stage to move on to the great theatre of life. Firmly convinced that culture can be the key to change, we propose Shakespeare”. On stage, the young actors of the Puntozero company, with their personal experiences, bring strength and depth to the characters and the situations of the play. A dream created behind bars which transmits an inebriating sense of freedom.
