The return of Milano incontra la Grecia, the review which brings to Milan the most creative and innovative of Greek artistic production.
The driving force of the festival, which this year will be celebrating its tenth anniversary, is the conviction that Greek culture holds valuable contemporary artistic potential that is rarely given an opportunity to emerge abroad. This is why a platform has been created for the presentation of contemporary Greek art, allowing both young and established Greek artists to present their work in Milan.
The 2019 edition of Milano incontra la Grecia presents three productions at the Teatro Studio Melato: on Monday 10 June, Clean City by Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris, Wednesday 12 June at 8 p.m. BSTRD by Katerina Andreou, and at 10 p.m. In case of loss by Kóka & Panú (Konstandina Efthimiadou & Panagiotis Manouilidis).
The festival opens with Clean City by Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris, a play-documentary created during the years of the most profound crisis, when Greece saw the emergence of extreme right-wing ideology which promised to “cleanse” the country.
Five women of different ages, migrants from South Africa, Bulgaria, Russia, the Philippines and Albania, arrive in Greece to work as cleaners. Here they come up against racism and extreme pressure against immigrant communities. Their stories, their personal accounts, and their points of view become a cue to talk about the dangers of fascism, female immigration in Greece, and of the stereotype of immigrant cleaners. At the same time, the play explores the historical, philosophical and political dimension of “cleansing”, the Nazi connotation of the word and its role in racist ideology and the creation of a “pure” race. Beginning with the question “Who cleans the city of Athens?”, the two directors have reconstructed a narrative of Greek society based on the point of view of foreigners, of people who have migrated to Athens in search of a better future.
