Inspired by David Foster Wallace’s unfinished novel The pale king, the play tells of the alienated and empty lives of three clerks at the Inland Revenue, shedding light on the fragility and the paradoxes of our existences.

A neon-lit office, three Inland Revenue clerks and a recent flood; on the other side, a room full of people waiting. Between them, a screen shows the spectators a video-reportage of the working day of those three clerks. Inspired by The pale king, the last, unfinished novel by David Foster Wallace, through a play made up of combinations and unsettling relationships, in a blend of theatre and cinema, fiction and non-fiction, the play examines the ability to retain one’s humanity despite the boredom and bureaucratic complexity of daily life.
La Ballata dei Lenna is a theatrical research collective founded in 2012 at the “Nico Pepe” Civic Academy of Dramatic Arts in Udine, founded by Nicola Di Chio (1985), Paola Di Mitri (1984), and Miriam Fieno (1985). Their plays include: La protesta una fiaba italiana; Cantare all’amore; REALITalY; Il paradiso degli idioti (finalista Premio Scenario 2015); Human Animal (2017)
