Cancelled Event
An exhilarating and caustic comedy by Eduardo De Filippo which explores the meanderings of the human mind between “normality” and “madness”. What happens when a person fails to understand metaphors or irony and interprets every word “literally”?

Ditegli sempre di sì is one of the first pieces by Eduardo De Filippo, written in 1927 and staged a year later by Vincenzo Scarpetta. It was returned to at the beginning of the 1930s by the company which he had founded with his brothers and tells the story of Michele Murri (Gianfelice Imparato) who, after a year spent in a mental institution, returns home, to be looked after by his sister Teresa (Carolina Rossi).
The man is far from cured, but no-one seems to notice. His madness is expressed in his mania for perfection and in his incapacity to understand the subtleties of words. For him, every metaphor, irony or allegory is the truth. This results in misunderstanding and accidents - the origin of the title which invites people to “dirgli sempre di si - Always say yes” - which involve his family and friends, such as when his sister, a widow, tells him she is going to re-marry, this time to a middle-aged man, describing him with the characteristics of her neighbour. Michele tells the news of this impossible marriage to whoever he meets... a lively and colourful work, an entertaining comedy which, while maintaining its farcical tone, offers a serious reflection on the ephemeral confine between mental health and illness.
