Based on the accounts of the survivors and the statements made by the perpetrators, Renato Sarti writes and stages a play on the horrors of the Riseria di San Sabba, the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy, to ensure that “everyone knows and remembers”.
Teatro Grassi
“Few know what the Riseria di San Sabba in Trieste was in all its horror; the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy, complete with crematorium (its victims totalling between three and five thousand). A cloak of guilt has silenced voices ever since the war ended, at times contaminating evidence regarding the events of just over seventy-five years ago”, writes Renato Sarti in his director’s notes.
The play - an example of documentary theatre: an account, a story, memory and a warning for the future - returns to the stage on the occasion of Remembrance Day. A play which is also tied to the memory of Strehler, who was born in that area and who in 1995 took part in a reading held inside the Risiera. Moni Ovadia, who was present, recalls the event: “Illuminated by theatrical lighting, behind the bars of one of the cells, shone the unmistakable white hair of Giorgio Strehler. With his powerful Barcola-accented voice, the theatrical genius and relentless anti-fascist incarnated the voice of the prisoners.
Duration: one hour and 15 minutes without interval
