The stage reading with Sonia Bergamasco, directed by Marco Rampoldi, returns to the theatre for the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. Based on the original writings of Fernanda Wittgens, it is a testimony to the tireless efforts of the scholar to save Milanese monuments from the bombings during the Second World War.

Created last season and based on the original writings of Fernanda Wittgens, Il miracolo della cena tells the story of the scholar and art critic who was, among other things, the first female Superintendent of the Galleries of Milan.
Directed by Marco Rampoldi, Sonia Bergamasco lends voice and body to a woman who filled her role in public service for the protection of public assets in the most noble of manners and was always true to her ideals - even in the terrible context of the racial laws - and dedicated herself entirely to the conservation and valorsation of the wealth of Milan and the world.
Wittgens worked quickly and with great energy to safeguard the numerous monuments in Milan, including The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, which was protected from firearms, the violence of explosions, and miraculously from the destruction brought by the bombings.
In the Fascist period, Wittgens also spent a number of months in prison, at San Vittore, accused of having protected a number of Jewish citizens and of having helped them to expatriate. While for Fernanda prison proved to be an “opportunity for improvement”, as she defined it in a letter to her mother, it was in post-war Milan, bearing the wounds of its most important cultural and historical areas and monuments, that her role became even more instrumental. She acted tirelessly to ensure that the reconstruction of monuments be considered a necessary priority on a par with factories, hospitals and schools. In this period she achieved her second “miracle”, working for eight years and drawing on “a large amount of vital energy” in order to make sure that Leonardo’s fresco was suitably restored.
The play is part of the Leonardo 500 programme.
Duration: 50 minutes without interval
