The return of the great Jazz al Piccolo, with the Civica Jazz Band conducted by Enrico Intra, Italian guests and evenings dedicated to past and present greats. The 22nd edition of Orchestra senza Confini opens with a tribute to Count Basie, pianist, composer and orchestra conductor whose name is synonymous with swing.
Teatro Grassi
A presentation of the most interesting jazz scenes in Italy, a tribute to past and present greats, small groups and big bands. The return of the great Jazz al Piccolo with the Orchestra senza Confini review, now in its 22nd edition. There are four concerts programmed between January and April 2020.
The review begins with a tribute to Count Basie, a concert that examines the important history of big band jazz with classics ranging from the 1930s to the 1970s.
The second appointment (Teatro Strehler, 24 February 2020) is the evening Il jazz è donna, a precious opportunity to present contemporary music through “the other half of sound”, now an important entity on the national scene non only in terms of quality, but also in numbers.
The review continues on 30 March, again at the Teatro Strehler, with Tentets, a tribute to two great Swiss jazz musicians, the trumpet player Franco Ambrosetti and the pianist and arranger George Gruntz.
Lastly, on 20 April at the Teatro Studio Melato, Il mondo musicale di Giovanni Tommaso, a concert dedicated to a musician who has more than half a century of jazz behind him and who has a history of important musical achievements.
Omaggio a Count Basie
The longest-living orchestra conductor in the history of Jazz, whose activity even continued after his death, as well as being a pianist, composer and arranger, Count Basie is synonymous with swing, shades of blues, and the use of riffs as an important element of songs, often combined with an overwhelming sense of communication and an excellent dynamism.
The Civica Jazz Band, which recorded the album We Love Basie in 2006 for the MAP label, takes on the huge repertoire of that legendary orchestra, ranging from the masterpieces of the 1930s and ‘40s to the more elaborate constructions of later decades, proposing a stirring journey through the Basi universe accompanied by the sound and style of the soloists who make up the big band workshop of Enrico Intra. From Jumpin’ at the Woodside to Tickle Toe, right up to April in Paris, the music navigates within original arrangements, combining the strength of the grand orchestra with the elasticity of a small group.
