Cancelled Event
Ibsen’s masterpiece on maturity, staged by Marco Sciaccaluga, is a perfect device, capable of stripping bare the weaknesses, dreams and expectations of each character, touching on the powerful themes of contemporary unease.

“The most powerful winter passage of Scandinavian art”, is how Edvard Munch defined John Gabriel Borkman by Henrik Ibsen, a play from 1896 and the penultimate of his theatrical works. But the cold is internal, pervading the souls and lives of the characters, all entwined in an intricate family situation caused by Borkman himself who, in the past, in order to get ahead, sacrificed the love of Ella, instead marrying her twin sister Gunhild and destroying the lives of the entire family.
A work in which the acute and disenchanted analysis of upper-class life, typical of Ibsen’s work, comes across as a powerful portrait of a man without regrets, who adores wealth, kills love, steals, and then absolves himself.
“I have focused on a contemporary setting, foregoing a nineteenth century atmosphere, in order to examine our present in a more forceful manner - said Marco Sciaccaluga -. I believe that this is a play based on a very ancient idea: man is cruel to man, or rather, every human being is the enemy of every other human being”.
Starring Gabriele Lavia in the title role, Laura Marinoni as his wife Gunhild, and Federica Di Martino as Ella.
A play which forms part of the artistic project “PROGETTO IBSEN - I pilastri della drammaturgia contemporanea (IBSEN PROJECT - The pillars of contemporary drama)” involving: Teatro di Roma, Teatro della Toscana, Teatro Stabile di Napoli, Teatro Nazionale di Genova with the plays “An Enemy of the People - John Gabriel Borkman – The Master Builder”
Duration: two hours and 40 minutes including interval
