It is a play which represents a new and unique chapter in the history of contemporary theatre. Mistero Buffo by Dario Fo and Franca Rame returns to the stage with Mario Pirovano, a self-taught actor who was “brought up” in the school run by the two great actors and who, for the last 25 years, has been taking their shows throughout Italy and all around the world.

Teatro Grassi
It was in 1983 that Mario Pirovano met Dario Fo and Franca Rame for the first time, in England. The same year he joined their Theatrical Company, taking part in all the shows in various roles, until in 1991 he made his debut in the lead role, staging Mistero Buffo with the direction of Dario Fo.
Mistero Buffo, the masterpiece which made twentieth-century history, is an extraordinary blend of comedy and drama with roots in popular theatre, that of sacred medieval performances (known as mysteries), jesters and the Commedia del’Arte.
For years Dario Fo, together with Franca Rame, collected spoken testaments, legends and documents from popular theatre from various regions of Italy and brought them together in this show. The very provocative monologues have an ironic and prophetic aspect which entertains, provokes and fascinates. It is a play which is capable of attracting even the youngest of generations. In fact the themes of the jests are always topical: power, injustice, hunger, rebellion, the search for a life which is worth sharing joyously. The continuous references to current affairs which provide the setting for the various parts reveal the present in all its false ingenuity and hypocrisy, providing the audience with moments of reflection but also of unbridled comedy. The passages are recited in a language which brings together various Northern and central Italian dialects; a language which is perfectly understandable thanks to the powerful gestural skills of Mario Pirovano, who Fo himself described as “a narrator of great talent”.
Duration: two 2 hours and 30 minutes with interval
