What is the value of memory? How can the past influence our present? Ascanio Celestini tells of Nazi occupation in Rome, taking his cue from the Ardeatine massacre, lending a voice to the thousands of relatives and friends struck by the death of the 335 people assassinated.

On 23 March 1944, the Patriotic Action Groups attacked a German column in Via Rasella. On 24 March, in retaliation, the Nazis killed 335 people in a cave in Via Ardeatina, ten Italians for each German killed. Twenty years on from its debut, Ascanio Celestini stages Radio Clandestina, a show which reflects on history and memory, beginning with one of the most tragic episodes in the Nazi occupation of Italy.
“The story of the Partisan uprising and the occupation of Rome is often told in a confused manner - writes Ascanio Celestini -. Above all the Ardeatine massacre and the action in Via Rasella which preceded it are part of a story which is told “backwards”. Taking as a starting point material published in the book by Alessandro Portelli L’ordine è già stato eseguito, in Radio Clandestina I lend a voice to the oral part of the story which still presents those days in a vital, direct and not overturned manner”. The book is based on approximately 200 interviews which demonstrate that this is not the story of those three days, but something which is still alive and living in the memory of an entire city. It is the story of the women who went in search of their men, of the wives who worked in the 1950s and the children and grandchildren who still tell that story.
Duration: one hour and 15 minutes without interval
