Published in 1928, Romancero gitano is the most important collection of poetry by Federico García Lorca, a tribute to the Gypsy world and the magic of a mysterious and fascinating people. Lluís Pasqual, together with the actress Nuria Espert, has created a new and majestic re-reading of the author which he considers to be closest to his own sensitivity.

Teatro Grassi
Nuria Espert and Lluís Pasqual return to the words of Federico García Lorca, a poet and playwright who plays an important role in the professional career of both artists, together creating a “definitive” version of the masterpiece by the Andalusian poet.
Created in 2018 on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of García Lorca, the show stages the collection of poetry which combines Romanity, Christianity, Moorish and Jewish Spain, and naturally the Gypsy component.
“Federico García Lorca liked to read his poetry publicly - explains Pasqual - usually to a group of friends. Romancero gitano was Federico’s first important book, where he discovers and recognises his essence as a poet. It is a simple yet fathomless collection, and this is why we are still fascinated when listening to this catalyst of words which contain such mystery. Federico expressed his most profound feelings through women on many occasions. And the actresses, with their bodies and their voices, brought life to the women in his poems. Nuria Espert is one of the actresses that Federico in some way “chose” to represent him, following in the footsteps of Josefina Artigas, Lola Membrives, Margarita Xirgu... Nuria has “breathed” Federico for many years. This is why, at times, like a flash, during the reading the memory of something that the actress and the poet have shared emerges, going beyond the confines of time and its laws”.
