Faust by Goethe is the latest stage in the artistic career of Federico Tiezzi. A journey of discovery through the director’s favourite themes: crisis of subjectivity, of the individual, the crisis of the self; a reflection on the conflict between the intellectual in his aspirations for eternity and the reality of a physical and biological dimension which relentlessly consumes.

Through the work of Goethe, Federico Tiezzi takes on the legend of Faust. The author worked on the play for six decades, from 1772 until 1831, constructing a monumental work based on the figure of the 16th century doctor and magician. Through Goethe, this character, who yearned for absolute knowledge and eternal youth, has become part of the collective imagination of the Western world, as well as a symbol of the crisis of conscience and soul of contemporary man.
In the first part, that examined by the play, the figure of Mephistopheles is central, presented as the opposite to Faust, his alter ego and, from a Freudian point of view, the projection of his unconscious mind. Federico Tiezzi returns (as was the case in Freud e l’interpretazione dei sogni by Stefano Massini, in Signorina Else by Arthur Schnitzler and in Antigone by Sophocles) to a theme of which he is very fond: the crisis of subjectivity, of the individual, the crisis of the self in its relationship with reality. At the same time, the play examines the conflictual relationship between the intellectual, who is tired of theorising and for working on ideas, and reality; the physical and biological, sentimental and emotional world which escapes them. It speaks of the dynamics of desire and feeling.
