Filippo Dini and Arianna Scommegna are the best-seller writer Paul Sheldon and his tormentor, the ex-nurse Annie Wilkes, who holds him hostage and tortures him to convince him to rewrite his latest novel. Misery, the heroine of the saga, cannot be dead!

“At the beginning of the eighties, my wife and I travelled to London on business and for pleasure. I slept on the plane and dreamt of a popular author (he may have resembled me, but he certainly wasn’t James Caan) who ended up in the clutches of a psychopathic fan, marginalised by a growing form of paranoia, who lived in a remote farm who knows where...”, explains Stephen King in his autobiographical work On Writing, talking of how Misery came about. William Goldman, the highly successful Hollywood screenwriter (author of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the president’s men, Marathon Man, to name but a few) has based a successful Broadway play and equally famous film on the novel.
In the dual role of director and lead character, Filippo Dini says “Among all of the writers that populate King’s work, Paul Sheldon is the strongest and most desperate. A prisoner of his talent and work, he discovers himself in his journey into hell in the company of Annie. And she is simply unforgettable. Annie is the exasperation of the desire and love for art, of that silent and secret prayer that each and every one of us recites to themselves every time we turn to the first page of the latest novel by our favourite author, or when we take our seat in the stalls, the lights go down and the play begins. Misery is an important work on the magical power of narrative. This is why it is a great privilege and a fantastic opportunity to be able to bring this story to the theatre. Because the theatre is a place of Magic”.
