Teatro Strehler
Organised by the Cultural Association Musica Oggi, in collaboration with the Piccolo Teatro, and twinned with JAZZMI, the 5th edition of MITJAZZ is set out over three events based on original projects. This year, the first two concerts will be picking up on part of the programme for “Orchestra Senza Confini”, which was suspended after the first event due to the COVID emergency.
The festival begins with Il Jazz è Donna, a view of the Italian female jazz scene, followed by a tribute to George Gruntz and Franco Ambrosetti with a review of their significant discography from the 1980s, Tentets. Lastly, the progect Piani Diversi, involving a master of classic piano, Carlo Balzaretti, a jazz great, Enrico Intra, and a musicologist, Maurizio Franco, in a singular and commented conversation between classic works and improvisation.
The first event in the fifth edition of MITJAZZ is dedicated to Il jazz è donna which proposes a view of the Italian female jazz scene, a precious opportunity to present contemporary music through “the counterpart of sound”, now an important entity on the national scene non only in terms of quality, but also in numbers. Each musician will be contributing with a piece, either their own composition or part of the international jazz repertoire and arranged for big band, and will perform it as a soloist together with the orchestra. The various choices form an extremely varied musical panorama, the result of the personalities of the guest jazz musicians, who differ not only for their own personal poetry and style, but also for the generations they belong to. This articulated journey will see the funky-blues of Caterina Crucitti, an important electric bass player on the Italian scene, who has important national collaborations under her belt, to the elegant mainstream music of the seventeen-year-old Camilla Rolando, a young trombone talent with a focus on modern jazz traditions, while the saxophone player Rosarita Crisafi, who emerged from the Civici Corsi di Jazz, will be providing a very modern and articulated performance. The piano and the voice of Laura Fedele, a prominent Italian voice, will then lead us to original contemporary mainstream jazz full of blues, where the bop virtuosity of the young rising star of Italian jazz guitar, Eleonora Strino, and the modal, intense and colourful music of the pianist Aisha Ruggeri will complete the line-up in a concert that offers a very varied and high-profile panorama and a number of faces that are new for Milanese audiences.
