120 years on from the birth of Eduardo, the Piccolo brings back to the stage a very original version of his masterpiece with a “solo” by Fausto Russo Alesi. Just one actor lending voice to the polyphony of solitude, temperaments, emotions and above all metaphors of this legendary comic piece.

“In a family, a home or a society, are there more dialogues or monologues? What are the manger scenes that each and every one of us sets up in our lives? These questions are the cornerstones of my work on Eduardo’s text”, explains Fausto Russo Alesi.
Following success at the Piccolo and in tours throughout Italy, Natale in casa Cupiello returns to Teatro Studio Melato on the one hundred and twentieth anniversary of the birth of Eduardo, stressing the importance of a theatre that is both popular and classic.
A play in which the body and the voice of Fausto Russo Alesi does not “bend” to health restrictions, but to a poetic “solitude” that has characterised much of Eduardo’s work.
In this highly original adaptation by Fausto Russo Alesi, the comedy is transformed into a solo work, in which the actor and director - with extraordinary skill - performs all of the characters in the text who, incapable of speaking openly, feed on pretence, denial and unspoken truths. From the “patriarchal” Lucariello, lost in his manic obsession over the construction of the Manger scene, to his wife Concetta, their children Tommasino and Ninuccia, the latter about to leave her husband and run away with her lover, and a polyphony of temperaments, emotions and metaphors evoked by the acting and directing of a single actor.
“This solitary version of the comedy - explains Russo Alesi - seemed to me to be a possible way, a key, to examining the art and language of Eduardo. I feel like I am taking on a wonderful musical score, a vibrant vehicle for communication, depth and poetry. I have chosen to use my body as the only instrument to play this drama on the Id and on solitude, imagining an evocative spectacle that lies between sleep and wakefulness, between life and death, between memory and the present, and between the stage and the audience”.
