Following performances this summer and in the Milanese Municipal buildings, Paolo Rossi returns to the Strehler where he uses words and music to tell of his encounters with the great Maestroes of the past - Jannacci, Gaber, De André, Fo... - and re-evoke stories that help to resist, to choose and to hope.

Teatro Strehler
Following his performances this summer at the Chiostro and Milanese Municipal buildings, Paolo Rossi returns to the Strehler with Pane o libertà, a play that was created during the lockdown and which skilfully brings together stand up, Commedia dell’Arte and Greek comedy. Rossi, accompanied on stage by the band Anciens Prodiges, composed of Emanuele Dell’Aquila, Stefano Bembi and Alex Orciari, is the author of a form of theatre that both enchants its audience and at the same time listens, living and adapting to their reaction, night after night, day by day. It is a form of theatre driven by emergency, playing a storytelling role and providing comfort to its audience. “I wanted to do something that allowed an outlet for my comedy in the form of social theatre and the poetry of the comic and magical”.
Agile, ground-breaking, beyond definitions of genre and flexible in its staging, Pane o libertà blends the figure of the original Harlequin, he who had a return ticket to the Afterlife, with that which was to become one of his evolutions as a popular entertainer who ranged from the stables to cabaret.
“Playing with the illusion of placing me on the stage , I will evoke my lucid dreams made up of stories that are a help in resisting, forced to choose between work and freedom, between health and freedom... in other words between bread and freedom (a slogan that I stole from somewhere, I don’t remember where, in The Plague by Camus) or even to not choose at all - continues Rossi . “They are contemporary or future stories of my own or stolen from my masters, just as they stole them from theirs. I refer to Jannacci, Gaber, De Andrè, Fo, Strehler, the comics from the Derby group and others that are unknown. I will also talk about death in a fun manner - if appropriate - and, with the help of my musical and comical companions, I will perform not for the audience, but with them - this is improvisation, not recital! We will be knocking down the fourth wall here. From now on, at least she will be able to rest in peace”.
