Portugal is the point of departure, the place from which Pippo Delbono began his study of a term, “love”, which is not just a feeling, but rather a frame of mind. It is a veritable mechanism that lies within the human organism and that selects, moves, fragments and recomposes everything that we see, feel and desire.
Amore is a musical and lyrical journey through an external - Portugal, Angola and Cape Verde - and internal landscape, exploring the heartstrings that vibrate at the slightest touch. The music is the melancholic sound of Fado, exploding in energetic bursts through the voices of the singers to reach the farthest corners of the auditorium; the rhythm is that of a parade, of a tableau vibrant, of a slow procession; the image is a picture composed of shifting colours that warms and cools.
Then there is the poetry, presented in the rich register of the Ligurian artist through his typical and hypnotic chant. The words are those of Carlos Drummond De Andrade, Eugenio De Andrade, Daniel Damásio Ascensão Filipe, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Jacques Prévert, Reiner Maria Rilke and Florbela Espanca.
“This play - explains Pippo Delbono - offers a dual vision of love. On the one hand - with words as a form of expression - we are all seeking love while trying to escape the fear that grips us. We try to avoid this love throughout the journey, even though we constantly recognise the urgency; I seek it and want it, and this is what frightens me. But the journey - made of music, voices, images - then manages, perhaps, to lead us towards reconciliation, a moment of peace in which that love can take form despite all possible fear”.
Amore is another attempt to bring life into the theatre. By speaking this word, invoking it in a secular and dreamlike manner, we may just manage to lend it a voice and free it, despite its lengthy absence from public discourse, from the confusion that has reigned over the entire narrative of this frightening, universal and terribly human odyssey.
