Born from encounters with humanitarian workers from the International Red Cross and Doctors without Borders, the play tells the story of the lives of these contemporary heroes, their fragilities, and weaknesses, as well as the tireless commitment to bringing relief and aid, and thus keeping evil at bay.

His mother a doctor and his father a journalist, Tiago Rodrigues has often asked himself why he has chosen to express the world, rather than saving it with more concrete actions. In creating Dans la mesure de l’impossible, he set off to explore the Geneva Conventions and the humanitarian workers that uphold it. His encounter with people working for the International Committee of the Red Cross and for Doctors without Borders instilled in him a desire to see the world through their eyes, and to write a theatrical work that speaks of their experiences. “All professions are important—explains Rodrigues—but to my mind those based on care are the most sacred. Close proximity to violence, danger, and suffering, as well as to dignity and resilience, provides those who work in this field with a view of the world that we are unable to see”. Based on first-hand accounts, this multilingual play illustrates the dilemma of committed men and women who fight every day for a better world, despite being aware that they cannot change it. It speaks of their schizophrenic existence, in a continuous to-and-fro between areas of the planet devastated by humanitarian crises and the surreal tranquility of their homes.
