Uprootedness, loss, and suffering are the wounds that Io carries with her, wounds that will not heal. An invisible and invincible enemy that each and every one of us can embody, as a form of violence—in all its possible essences—that we feel as a present or future danger; a form of trauma that, as the main character shows us, can—if accepted—offer new depth to the meaning of life.

“Io is a performance presented in a small space full of energy; a space that resembles a chapel for prayer and self-reflection”; this is how Theodoros Terzopoulos describes the work written for him by Etel Adnan. The play is presented as a candle of remembrance that, when lit, illuminates the suffering of humankind and the persecution that afflicts it, providing the spectator with a profoundly intimate and moving experience. A monologue that creates dialogue with the spectator, an expression of the silent pain of the exile, flight, and sense of uprootedness of a woman, Io. Emigration, loss, trauma, and pain are the marks that death has left on Io. Io resists, gathers herself and moves on. However, the wound remains, a demon that, when it awakens, torments her from within, like an invisible and invincible enemy. She accepts the trauma and then, slowly, like a song dedicated to the Orient, begins to change, lending new depth to the meaning of her life. Io is a woman chased by a monster that each and every one of us can embody as a present or future threat; that form of violence with which we have, unfortunately, become familiar.
