A class of female students becomes a symbol of the experiences that many young women often face during the most fragile moments of their young lives.
Criticizing the education system in her country, است (Is), the play by the Iranian director Parnia Shams, questions the societal structures, rendering a school class the symbol of a society that is under latent yet constant control; a protest against an invisible authority capable of inhibiting creativity and relationships and even insinuating itself into the private choices of individuals.
The story develops around a class in a girls’ school (in Iran the school system is segregated by gender from primary school until university). Mahoor, a 16-year-old-girl who has just moved to Teheran mid-semester, enters this new school and forms a deep and intimate friendship with the best student in the class. The relationship between the two will become a form of resistance and rebellion against the exercising of power, telling a story that is both common and exceptional. Before the eyes of the audience, the writer paints a picture - one that is totally realistic yet magical - that reminds us of the value of school, not only as a place of learning but, above all, as a fertile ground for collaboration and solidarity.
