Mal, by Marlene Monteiro Freitas, takes the form of a theatrical and grotesque trial that examines evil in all its forms. “Evil” does not only represent “badness” but is expressed in a multitude of forms that have rendered it a determining aspect of many stories.

Teatro Strehler
Evil in all its widest meanings takes to the stage, embodied by a range of creatures and voices. Marlene Monteiro Freitas explores the numerous forms of evil that exist in our society through a group of dancers and actors who, through the movement of their bodies or with words (exclusively onomatopoeic), appear as prisoners in a catatonic state; sitting on a three-level stand like judges at a trial that punishes and condemns all forms of irregularity, they move through all the inquisitions in history. Mal can take on the meaning of unease, discomfort, pain, suffering, agony, sadness, torment, defect, horror, and—lastly—evil. It is this very multi-form aspect that has rendered evil dominant in so many stories and situations. The work presents a cast of disturbing yet fascinating characters with carnival-like personalities and expressiveness.
