È bello vivere liberi! is a play that aims to reappropriate the hopes and joys of the partisans. It is a play through which to rediscover the dizzying atmosphere of that period in Italian history during which everything seemed possible.

The play is inspired by the biography of Ondina Peteani, written by the historian Anna di Gianantonio, (Published by IRSML FVG 2007). Ondina, at the tender age of 17, realised that she could not stand by in the face of Fascist oppression, choosing to act with conscience and determination to change her country. Her journey began with clandestine meetings at Alma Vivoda’s communist school, a place that fostered the values of female emancipation and equality between men and women. At 18, she became a Partisan courier, also taking part in the formation of the Proletarian Brigade and the battle of Gorizia. Her story was suddenly interrupted when, at the age of 19, she was plunged into the hells of Nazi-Fascist deportations as a political prisoner.
“E’ bello vivere liberi! (It is wonderful to life in freedom)” are the last words that Ondina Peteani wrote, just a few weeks before her death when, in 2003 in hospital, her doctor asked her to close her eyes and write the first words that came to mind. What Ondina wrote was an expression of her deepest feelings.
