In Il canto della caduta, Marta Cuscunà goes back to an ancient epic story from the popular traditions of the Ladini, an ethnic minority from the central valleys of the Dolomites. The myth of Fanes, which tells of a golden age in which humans were allies with nature. In this most ancient of times, the role of leader was occupied by women. Then came a foreign king, which marked the beginning of a new era of domain and war.

Il canto della caduta is inspired by the ancient myth of Fanes, which tells of a golden age in which humans were allies with nature, allowing them to live in peace and abundance. Il canto della caduta tells of a “period older than time” and of a peaceful realm in which women were the leaders.
Then came a foreign king, which marked the beginning of a new era of domain and war. The lost realm of Fanes is the dark tale of the fall of humanity into the horrors of war. The opening scene is also the final scene: a battlefield. War is never seen on the stage. Yet it is present, expressed to the audience from the point of view of the only characters who always benefit; the crows. The crows form the choir, they describe the battle and wonder over the stubbornness of humankind to sow death until reaching the heights of massacre.
Every population has its particular wealth of mythical stories that narrate the origins of the universe, the gods and social order, and offer images of fear and age-old questions; is war an indelible aspect of human destiny? What constantly drives us to fight instead of making peace? Why do we hunt and persecute each other?
Il canto della caduta seeks new images for age-old questions and, through the myth of Fanes, brings to light the lost story of how we used to be, to that alternative form of society that offers a positive future for humanity and that is always presented as an impossible utopia. One that may have already existed.
