Arcangela Tarabotti and the nuns of Saint Clare in Udine employed a truly unique form of resistance. These women transformed the convent into a space for free thought and of protest against religious dogma and male culture with a cultural fervour that was unthinkable for women of the time. The Inquisition sought through force to re-establish control over the nuns of Saint Clare in Udine, but they managed to resist for years, making a mockery of male domination and creating a surprising all-women micro-society at a time when women were excluded from all political and economic aspects of life.
La semplicità ingannata is not a documentary, but rather an artistic project where theatre also provides an opportunity to consider historical events as a cue to examine contemporary society. This approach implies creating a story not from a documentary point of view, but through an artistic vision with a precise positioning, one that is also prepared to go beyond the confines of the known, the philological and the politically correct.
