A fable, or rather, a visual story without dialogue, an epic for the eyes only; these are possible definitions of The Sheep Song. The protagonist of the play is a sheep. While in classic fables, animals are used to symbolise humans, here the character is based on an animal. It is the story of a sheep that becomes human, losing its innocence, abandoning its flock and its familiar environment to become a “lost sheep”; but no shepherd goes looking for it. Nietzsche described humans as a common thread between beasts and angels, suspended over the abyss. It is the synthesis of our tragedy; never “at home”, always moving, never in harmony with ourselves. The sheep is unable to get any further than a half-animal, half-human condition; its search for humanity becomes an ordeal, full of suffering, exclusion, humiliation, and pain.
