“The sea has never been friendly to man. At most, from the Odyssey to the present, it has been the accomplice of human restlessness. The stories are all alike... the stories of sailors are of extreme simplicity, and their meaning can be summed up in a nutshell. At sea, one is either fleeing from or chasing after something.” (Joseph Conrad)
Through a collection of excerpts that range from Joseph Conrad and the quote above, to anonymous Arabic reporters, via verses from Virgil’s Aeneid and the voices of contemporary migrants, Fuggi la terra e l’onde is a summary demonstration of how in challenging the sea, following a complex yet deep-set path, the search for salvation, for knowledge and for happiness come together.
Sea and adventure occupy the same metaphorical importance in our imaginations, mixed together in a complex mass that combines the thrill of discovery with the fear of nature and the unknown. The challenge of the explorer, the poet and the refugee... different ways to study the horizon and the winds, generated by fear and undefined desires.
All written, however, in fiery letters onto the human soul, in accordance with the rules of life, death and poetry.
Duration: 60’ without interval
