I Di/Versi by Balletto Civile is the result of a desire to involve the social fabric of the local area through two channels - performance and cinema -, working on a study on both civil society and poetry that takes its cue from the Madrigals by Monteverdi.

Sixteen “representatives” have been chosen from a call and used to create a performance and a short docu-film; the choices were made on the basis of the participants’ faces, stories, thoughts and need to express themselves, regardless of their initial artistic skill.
A short docu-film on the entire process, together with sixteen video bites, was produced on the basis of the interviews and information on the social background of the participants; in particular, their life stories allowed for the creation of an original contemporary madrigal for each representative.
The sixteen representatives then chose narrators from among the people closest to them to record the madrigal, with sampling by a sound designer, contributing to the score for the performance, which was in turn used to create the dance movements of the representatives, performed against a backdrop with large-scale photographs of their portraits. A challenge to take an active role and to turn their life stories into a work of art. Render our present sacred: “I am my Madrigal”.
Balletto Civile was founded in 2003 under the artistic direction of Michela Lucenti. The company is characterised by its study into a totally scenic language, favouring interaction between theatre, dance, original live singing and the profound relationship between the performers.
The performances by Balletto Civile draw from various sources of inspiration, which range from a re-reading of classics from Theatre, Dance and Music, both original works by Italian writers and the staging of great foreign writers.
The company enjoys the support of a number of organisations in both Italy and abroad, including FVG Teatro d’Innovazione of Udine, Fondazione Teatro Due of Parma, Neukoellner Oper of Berlin, Teatro della Tosse of Genova, Festival Oriente Occidente of Rovereto and others. Since 2021 Michela Lucenti | Balletto Civile has been an associated artist at ERT Emilia Romagna Teatro.
