For his debut as a theatrical director, Nanni Moretti stages two plays by Natalia Ginzburg, exploring with bitter irony that resigned form of domestic intimacy where conflict has been replaced by indifference, emotional hollowness, and moral mediocrity.

Eleven Nastri d’Argento, nine David di Donatello, the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival, the Grand Prize from the juries in Venice and Berlin... after a life spent behind – and in front of – the camera, giving us films that have made cinematographic history, Nanni Moretti has decided to face the “terror” of the stage. A “terror” that he defines as the play between the intimacy of the written word and the clamour of those spoken to a live audience; a term used in this sense by Natalia Ginzburg, the writer chosen by the cinematographer for his debut as a theatrical director. «Ginzburg – said Valerio Binasco, the leading actor in the play – has a light hand, yet she digs deep into the soul, and hers are characters that are portrayed with incredible psychological skill, worthy of authors such as Chekhov.» Playing harshly with the values and customs that upper-class society holds dear, the main characters of Dialogo and Fragola e panna – the two actors brought together in this play – turn to the topics of marriage, loyalty, maternity, and friendship, expose their own ineptitude, and render the most tragic aspects of their existence comical.
The play of Friday 24 November is surtitled in French
Duration: 90’ (Dialogo, 40’ | Fragola e panna, 50’)
