As with the most perfect of Italian comedies, an exhilarating comedy of errors that tells the tragically comical adventure of a request to activate a telephone line in a Sicily at the end of the 19th century; the return to the stage of one of Andrea Camilleri’s most celebrated and loved novels.
-
Teatro Strehler
A simple request for the activation of a telephone line made by Pippo Genuardi in order to organise clandestine dates with his beloved Lillina sets in motion an endless chain of misunderstandings and confusion. This new production directed by Giuseppe Dipasquale sees the return to the stage of the original script written by Andrea Camilleri and Dipasquale based on the novel of the same name, one of the funniest to be written by the Sicilian author, set at the end of the 19th century in the imaginary town of Vigàta, where the Commissioner Montalbano, another of Cammileri’s characters, will later appear. The lead role is performed by Alessio Vassallo, who previously played Pippo Genuardi in the television version of La concessione del telefono.
«Pirandello was fond of saying that an author's work was over when he managed to write “the end” on a script – said Camilleri at the end of writing the stage adaptation –. Well, this script has the words “the end” on the last page. However, I feel it necessary to tell good old Luigi that the staging sees a new beginning for the work; different, new, and always unpredictable, always desperately exhilarating. This is why the boundaries of the theatre are like the horizon for travellers on the Oceans; always there and never in reach.»
