In the film The Trial of Joan of Arc by Robert Bresson, the French heroine, asked how she knew that the voice heard was that of an angel, replies: «Because I had the will to believe it». This served as the cue on which Pablo Messiez based his piece, which in 2023 was proclaimed play of the year in Spain and is now performing for the first time in Italy.

La voluntad de creer opens with Amparo coming back from South America together with his wife, who is pregnant. There are complications with the pregnancy, and Juan, Amparo’s brother, is the only one who can help her wife; convinced he is the reincarnation of Jesus of Nazareth, he wants to believe he can perform a miracle, and thus, a miracle is performed.
Drawing inspiration from the film Ordet by Carl Theodor Dreyer, based in turn on the play by Kaj Munk, Messiez examines the relationship between will and faith, suggesting that this lies at the foundations of the pact with the audience that makes theatrical fiction possible.
Maintaining that the absence of the spectator deprives the ritual of theatre of all meaning, the director has chosen to create this play by rendering all the rehearsals public, thus demonstrating that, even in the creative process, action is only possible by sharing the will to believe.
Duration: 90’ without intermission
