The rituals of violence against women in wartime never change. The director, the founder of the Political Voice Institute at the Maxim Gorki Theater of Berlin, has created an ensemble piece with the first-hand accounts of 21 women aged between 10 and 71; from Ukraine, Belarus who now live in Poland, having fled from war and persecution.
MOTHERS A SONG FOR WARTIME brings together their experiences with a work on the traditional Ukrainian song ritual shchedrivka/Щедрівка. Their song takes on the form of an accusation, an appeal, a plea and a warning, with the hope that the words sung can soon become a reality.
By bringing together traditional music, rhymes, spells, poetry, desires and political statements, the choir expresses their melodic desires to the world, with a hope for a new era that will last a lifetime. They use the power of their voices to give a name to that for which no words exist.
