Love, betrayal, vendetta; a news story seen through the eyes of one of the most celebrated poets of the twentieth century. Lina Sastri is the extraordinary protagonist of the drama by García Lorca, directed in a blend of theatre, dance and music by Lluís Pasqual.

Teatro Strehler
Lluís Pasqual, who has always been closely tied to the theatre of García Lorca – staging for the Piccolo El publico in 1986 and Donna Rosita nubile in 2010 –, is now staging the drama written by the Andalusian author in 1933, accentuating the poetic aspects and distancing himself from all forms of naturalism. A play in which words, dance and song are blended together with the skills of Lina Sastri.
«Nozze di sangue, one of the most striking works in the history of European twentieth-century theatre, is no more than a “chronicle of a fact of life” told by a poet – commented the director –. Just a few kilometres from Granada, in a barren area of countryside during wedding celebrations, the bride runs off with a distant relative. The betrayed groom follows them, resulting in a stabbing. The news is reported by the press. In the mind of the poet, this true story takes a profound and dark journey, and his presentation of the “facts” is transformed into a protest against any “convention” in the realm of love, and a cry of freedom in following the passion that burns two hearts and two bodies with a single flame. In his exploration of the story, he has created two gigantic characters, two victims, two women: the bride and the mother. Those who remain, forced forever to bear the pain and the scars of the so-called Spanish “cainism”; brother against brother, divided until death.»
