As part of its successful series of adaptations for marionettes of classics of European literature, the Carlo Colla & Figli Company has created a new production, freely inspired by the masterpiece by Miguel de Cervantes and based on a never-before-performed manuscript from the Company archives.
-
Teatro Grassi
The play is based on a selection of iconic moments from the novel by Cervantes and on an ancient handwritten script held in the archives of the Company and never previously performed. Victim of a visionary madness that leads him to see the distorted reality of the extreme idealisation of the values of life, humanity and love, Alonso Quijano proclaims himself to be Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Fantasy takes the place of reality, leading him into battles and adventures on a wandering journey in which he also seeks to conquer the beautiful Dulcinea, a non-existent lady, the fruit of his imagination. Sancho Panza, his irreplaceable squire – who in the 1879 manuscript is played by Gerolamo, the marionette that symbolises Milan – embodies the simplicity of things and often leads the “hero” back to reality.
Dusty libraries and picaresque landscapes, imaginary knights, windmills mistaken for giants, as well as princesses to be saved that are nothing more than marionettes belonging to a company of storytellers, serve as a backdrop to the adventures of the two characters in a dizzying journey through fantasy and reality.
Recommended for audiences aged 8 and over
