After five years spent in Paris, Ljuba returns to the family estate in the Russian countryside. She is greeted with terrible news; due to growing debt, the property is to be sold at auction. The merchant Lopachin proposes to portion the land and put it up for rent, but the woman is not ready to give up her magnificent cherry orchard...
