A famous but declining actor, his wife, addicted to opiates, and two children fighting their own demons. Gabriele Lavia and Federica Di Martino explore the painful intimacy of the Tyrone family, the subject of the most autobiographical drama written by Eugene O’Neill (Pulitzer Prize, 1957).

Long Day's Journey into Night is the masterpiece by the playwright Eugene O’Neill. Written between 1941 and 1942, it was performed for the first time in Stockholm in 1956, and won the Pulitzer Prize a year later, after the death of the author. Sidney Lumet directed the first adaptation for the cinema in 1962, with Katharine Hepburn and Ralph Richardson.
Set in 1912, the powerful and harrowing drama tells the story of a day in the life of the Tyrone family, one full of conflict, addiction and painful secrets. Gabriele Lavia and Federica Di Martino stage this work-confession, a “journey back in time” in the life of O’Neill, a merciless dive into the bitterness of irreversible failure.
«The lives of men – writes Lavia in his director’s notes – are full of tenderness and violence. Of love and contempt. Understanding and rejection. Of family and its ruin.»
