A masterclass with director and writer Marcus Lindeen to explore his performance Memory of Mankind, soon on stage at Teatro Studio Melato, and the unique creative processes behind his performances.
The director and writer Marcus Lindeen opens his creative process and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the performance Memory of Mankind, on stage at Teatro Studio Melato from 15 to 18 January.
he play, developed in collaboration with dramaturg and translator Marianne Ségol, continues Lindeen’s exploration of documentary-based theater, transforming extensive research and interviews into intimate, conversational performances. Instead of a traditional stage, the audience and performers share the same physical space, sitting together within the scenography itself.
Marcus Lindeen reflects on the use of the “sound script” that guides the performers through hidden earpieces during the play, as well as his unique casting process, which involves finding non-professional actors with personal connections to the stories they portray.
In 2024, Lindeen completed an artistic research project at Stockholm University of the Arts and published a book about his methods of staging documentary material as conversations, both in theater and cinema.
Using examples from his work in both mediums, Lindeen presents his process of turning real-life stories into compelling narratives, offering insights into his distinctive approach to creating documentary-inspired performances that challenge traditional forms of storytelling.
The masterclass is in English (with live translation in Italian) and is dedicated particularly - but not exclusively - to drama school students or people familiar with writing for the stage/cinema and directing.
The masterclass is free with reservation required, subject to availability.
