The Flemish collective FC Bergman, winners of a Silver Lion at the 2023 International Theatre Festival, returns to the Piccolo with Works and Days, a reflection inspired by the Greek poet Hesiod on the increasingly fragile relationship that binds the human community to the planet it inhabits.
The Flemish collective FC Bergman speaks of its new creation, Works and Days, inspired by the poem of the same name by Hesiod, as an «authentic eulogy to the relentless power of the group and the boundless power of nature».
In the 8th century B.C., the Greek poet Hesiod dedicated a poem to his brother, in which he made a series of suggestions regarding the art of agriculture. The work became a kind of farmer’s almanac in verse, combining technical suggestions with a more general ethical and didactic account.
FC Bergman has adopted Hesiod’s title for its own reflection – once again without text – on life on (and with) Earth. An existence that is often in line with the rhythm of the seasons, the laws of the Earth, and the customs of the community that cultivates it. A new era, however, with new possibilities and aspirations, is forging its way into this fragile communion between humanity and the planet.
