There are many elements of a disturbing topicality in Carlo Goldoni's Le donne gelose (Jealous Women) and many themes for discussion in the event organised by the Piccolo with the director Giorgio Sangati and the company of the play, at the Teatro Studio Melato until 22 November.

In 1752, the year in which the play was written, Carlo Goldoni viewed his world and his home city with extreme disillusionment and, as the fine observer of the human soul that he was, created his characters with great attention: «The women of the play are slaves to gossip and suspicion, the men slaves to gambling and the lottery – says the director Giorgio Sangati. – The idea at the base of everything is that only destiny can resolve an otherwise compromised situation. Goldoni, punctually, introduces the “conclusive” win in a moment dominated by a complete mistrust in the possibility of actively creating a solution to the problems. Disillusion reigns in society and politics, the State is non-existent. A chronic, degenerate individualism prevails».
