In a place which resembles a physics classroom, immersed in an almost dreamlike atmosphere, three people - two men and a woman - speak of events which took place a long time before, when all three were still alive. The three are the scientists Niels Bohr (Orsini), his wife Margrethe (Lojodice) and Werner Heisenberg (Popolizio). They are trying to understand what happened in distant 1941 in Copenhagen, when the German physicist Heisenberg suddenly paid a visit to his maestro Bohr in Nazi-occupied Denmark. Both involved in scientific research, but on opposing sides, probably near to the creation of the atomic bomb, the two scientists had a conversation in Bohr’s garden; the subject of that conversation is still a mystery today, and in order to solve it, history has offered various possibilities.
On the basis of these, the author has created an enthralling tapestry in which time overlaps, offering a universal value to the questions posed by the characters. The various theories which came up at the time are presented one after the other, re-proposing the possible meetings between the two physicists. It is not possible to have a single truth or a precise summary of the various theories, because each one is no more than the point of view of the person who came up with it. Everything is human, nothing is absolute.
Eighteen years on from its first staging, the Piccolo once more welcomes a play which has become a classic of contemporary theatre thanks to a trio of extraordinary actors.
