The director Mario Martone directs a play by Eduardo De Filippo as part of a cultural project with a strong political and social character. “Theatre comes to life when it examines reality - explains Martone - when it addresses its audience, not only pushing boundaries in a formal sense but also acting on a political level”. Il sindaco del Rione Sanità has been brought up to date. The idea of giving the role of the Mayor to a young and decisive man - while the character written by Eduardo was in his twilight years - places the figure of the main character once again at the centre of the criminal system that he represents, instead of as the symbol of a fading system of values and disvalues as he was in the original work by Eduardo, and the same time sets the piece in a dramatically vivid and real world. This staging is a co-production between Elledieffe and Teatro Stabile Torino - Teatro Nazionale, together with Nest - Napoli Est Teatro di San Giovanni a Teduccio, founded by a group of young artists who have created a space for the arts in one of the most troubled areas of Naples. The main character in the play, Antonio Barracano (Francesco Di Leva), runs the neighbourhood as a “man of honour” in a reversal of the legalitarian system. Don Antonio is aided by the doctor Fabio Della Ragione (Giovanni Ludeno) who, through his work, manages to make sure that the the results of the settling of scores that take place in the neighbourhood are never discovered by the law. Daily life in the Sanità area is disrupted when Barracano clashes with Arturo Santaniello (Massimiliano Gallo) a wealthy baker and miserly father: a conflict which is destined to end in tragedy.
Duration: one hour and 50 minutes without interval
