Thirty years on, Donatella Massimilla celebrates the beginning of the artistic, cultural and social journey of the Teatro d’Arte Sociale. The work with a company of female inmates and ex-inmates of the San Vittore prison was the beginning of an artistic experience of true recovery and transformation.

Teatro Grassi
Thirty years ago saw the debut of Il Decameron delle donne based on the novel by the Russian author Julia Voznesenskaya. A group of women in a maternity ward, kept away from their children due to a skin infection, tell stories of life and love, inspired by Boccaccio. It is a metaphor for the hard reality of the Gulag, experienced by the author before her exile in Germany. It was this play - now represented in a new form with a number of original actors, Olga Vinyals Martori, Donatella Massimilla herself, and Gilberta Crispino, alongside young inmates and ex-inmates - which led Massimilla to organise theatre with the female inmates of San Vittore, discovering the meaning of imprisonment, isolation, a lack of affection, a sense of waiting, and hope. This was the beginning of the long “all-women’s” theatrical journey which led to the creation of CETEC and the theatrical company Dentro/Fuori San Vittore.
