Sonia Bergamasco reads two stories by Vasilij Grossman, the great twentieth-century Russian author, well-known for the novel-epos Lie and fate.
The actress has chosen The dog and The Sistine Madonna, stories that focus of a theme that is particularly dear to the author, the eternal conflict between good and evil.
Just a few years before his death, Vasilij Grossman wrote a short story entitled The dog. Though the innocent point of few of this creature, it describes the preparation and execution of a journey into space that produces, as a secondary and unexpected effect, a new relationship between the protagonists of this experience.
In 1955 in a hall in the Puškin Museum, Grossman saw the Sistine Madonna, the famous painting by Raffaello that was taken from Dresden to Moscow as a spoil of war. He was profoundly moved by the vision of the work. He saw in the eyes of the Madonna and the Child the image of countless women who, together with their children, were conducted into the hellish extermination camp in Treblinka. “In looking at the Sistine Madonna - said Grossman - we hold on to the faith that life and freedom are one and that there is nothing more important than the humanity in man. It will exist for eternity, and it will be victorious”.
Sonia Bergamansco: according to Montaign, words belong to both the speaker and the listener, and this is why I have put much thought into which would be the right voice for us in Milan in this period. It had to be more that simply an “effective” voice, it needed to bring together a before and an after, it needed to address everyone with simplicity and depth.
A empathic, naked and adventurous voice. It is his - I thought - Vasilij Grossman, an author that I had read extensively, but never in public. The delicate and precious opportunity presented by these evenings allows be to share with you the subtle light of Grossman’s point of view. A Russian writer and war correspondent who has told stories of women, men, children and animals with the absolute tenderness of those who have experienced and suffered historic events with passion, courage and a secular and everlasting faith in the goodness of individuals”.
